Kazunori Kurusu is a registered Japanese Patent and Trademark Attorney with 22-year professional experience in this patent business.
Following my 7-month experience in Panitch, Schwarze, Belisario & Nadel, LLP located in Philadelphia, U.S., as a trainee in 1999-2000, I started my business in my own law office, Kurusu Patent Law Office in Japan.
My experience extends to patent prosecution for software, numerical analyses, communications networks, mechanical and optical engineering, medical devices, and business methods, as well as patent litigation and licensing.
My experience also extends to foreign patent applications including U.S. applications and EP applications.
As for my recent extra tasks, I was a grader of the Examination for Japanese Patent Attorneys.
Before entering this patent business, I was a mechanical engineer in an automobile company in Japan for 4 years.

Our thoughs on the depth of translation from English into Japanese

In almost all of our cases, our current foreign associates are so (incredibly) frendly that they are willing to respond to our questions whataever, even when they are many and frequent. We alway really appreciate them helping us.

But at times, I recall when one of our foremer foreign assosiates said that, in response to our questions for our better understanding of some words in a PCT application, you should hire an English translator, and he would not answer any one of our questions.

Indeed, many peolpe may tend to assume that translation from English into Japanese does not require any special experiences, knowledge or skills. But we have a different view that, occasionally, we have to spend much time trying to catch the real meaning of a certain word or phrase in an English-written document and find an approporiate Japanese equivalent. So we need help from the authoer of the document that is to be literally translated.

In addition, we have to say that such translation goes beyond a mere conversion from an original word in English into a corresponding word in Japanse, just by using a dictionary and useful websites over the Internet. We need to read between lines in the document to find out why the auther had decided to pick and use that very word in reference to the common knowledge in the pertaining technical feild.

Our belief is that better translation begins with better understanding of the conception lying within an original document in the mental sphere of the English language, not in that of the Japanese language. It is followed by our creation of Japanese phrases by picking possibly best Japanese words, sometimes, by coining a word to cover a new concept originating from the corresponding English word. So translation is a creative work.

This leads to our another belief that the quality of a translation varies depending on who made that translation, and that, in a case of a JP national phase application, its rate of success made in the examination stage depends on it. This may cause a situation in which, while an invention was allowed in the U.S., but the same inention is kept rejected even after continued actions in Japan.

With the foregoing in mind, we are dedicated to make a quality translation from a patent-document perspective in the best interests of our foreign clients.
